5-Axis Frequently Asked Questions

What is 5-Axis Machining?

5 axis CNC machines are machines with 2 extra axis of movement above normal machines. 5 axis machines can move in 5 different planes: X axis = Left and Right Y axis = Back and forward Z axis = Up and Down A axis = Clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation (horizontal plane) B axis = Clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation (vertical plane)

What are the benefits of 5-Axis Machining?

5 axis machining dramatically improves productivity by allowing you to complete your component in “one hit, one loading.” 5 Axis machining also allows you to reduce set up and changeover times and eliminate the errors caused by frequent setup and changeover.

Why should I consider Jergens’ 5-Axis Vises?

Two words: superior quality. Jergens 5 Axis self-centering vises has been engineered to be the ideal solution for low profile five-axis workholding. Available in both 130mm and 75mm widths, they can accommodate a wide array of workpiece sizes. The quick change jaws incorporate a pull down feature to actively minimize jaw lift. Multiple jaw styles make this vise system configurable for most workholding needs, from first operation to finish work. They easily mount to a number of modular fixture platforms, adding to Jergens industry leading selection of quick change fixturing. Clamping forces up to 3,600 lbs. The leadscrew features rolled trapezoidal threads for superior strength and durability. A low friction surface treatment of critical components improves performance and reduces wear.
